June 2006

Free roll tournaments have exploded into the pubs and clubs of NSW and Victoria. With some clubs in NSW having in excess of 300 people at these weekly events, the concept has taken off in a big way. Less than 12 months ago the idea that poker would be as big as Trivia nights in Pubs and Clubs was laughed at – now the reality is that over 400 pubs and clubs Australia wide are running free poker events. Main prizes vary from a small trophy to a $25K all expenses seat entry to the WSOP in Las Vegas (NPL’s current season prize), which has captured the imagination of all types and standard of player to come along for a social night of poker and a bit of fun.

All you need is a “chip and a chair” for your chance to be a weekly winner, plus some perseverance to make the league leader board at season end. This entitles you to a shot at the main prize at the Grand Finale event. To find a free roll poker venue near you try NPL or APL

Poker players, dealers and casino managers always like to watch poker films - but from entirely different perspectives. Casino managers & dealers look for the inconsistent and incorrect procedures and technical aspects, also known as “artistic license” to create more dramatic scenes. Players look for the tells, the build up to the one major hand that eventually decides the winners (these miracle hands do not appear with any such frequency in real life) and how they think they would have played the same situation — possibly differently.

When the new film Lady Luck comes out we will all be watching with added interest from our two different sides.

Poker Terminology

AK — Anna Kournikova — Looks good but rarely wins!

Laying Down — The term used to describe the act of folding a decent (and possibly winnable) hand?

Splashing the Pot — term used to describe when players throw their chips directly into the pot. In a casino, it is not allowed.

There's no definitive answer to how we got the name "poker" for the popular card game. One theory says that is comes from the German verb "pochen," which means to brag or bluff. There is a contrasting theory that says it comes from the French "poque,' a card game similar to today's poker.

Did you know.... The reason that dealers "burn" a card in Texas Hold 'Em is a security measure. If the top card has a mark or defect that players can identiify this whilst it has been exposed during betting rounds.

Gaming Legislation Change in NSW - A cash entry fee can now be charged at poker events in NSW. This may be the single biggest change in legislation since gaming tables were introduced.
